How to utilize data for democracy

Under today’s polarized political environment, there is no ambiguity regarding one’s side. Preference and expectation get confused, and political judgment is swayed by partisan anchoring. Partisan loyalties lead voters to look at the same facts but to reach strikingly different conclusions. Furthermore, with social media’s increased influence, the spread of extremist views and misinformation became the most daunting challenge to democracy. Studies even show that false news spreads more rapidly on social media than real news does. Data, however, can serve as a critical weapon to tackle the nearly insurmountable problems in today’s politics. Social data, particularly, provides a channel for the public to raise their concerns and happiness, which offers an unfiltered view into true public sentiment. A proper analysis of this data is therefore key to gaining a comprehensive view of reality, which is a necessary step in the process of restoring our 'rationality.' ☆ WKF | ☆ Facebook | ☆ Instagram | ☆ Youtube│
