It would not be too much of an exaggeration to say that our lives have forever changed in the course of the Covid-19 pandemic. While we have become increasingly accustomed to physical distancing, we have become at the same time more and more reliant on virtual connectivity with the help of various technologies. The backbone of these technologies which has made all this possible are semiconductors. The rapid advancement of semiconductor technology has changed our daily routines through countless devices we can no longer imagine living without. In return, these life style changes in our societies have been driving technology development at yet an even faster pace. It is true that one of key scaling forces of semiconductors is “making it smaller”. Now the dimensions of these devices are going beyond nanometer scales to pack even more functionality onto one chip at the same or even lower cost as prior technology generations. Adding to this challenge is the fact that our society has rallied around the goal that any new technology solutions be more environmentally sustainable for the benefit of future generations.
